Why Empathy Is the Most Important AI Skill Nobody Is Talking About

Everyone is talking about what AI can do. Almost nobody is talking about what it feels like to use it.

That gap is where most AI products fail. Not technically, they might work exactly as designed. They process inputs, generate outputs, return results at remarkable speed. But somewhere between the model and the human on the other side of the screen, something gets lost. The experience feels cold, opaque, or just slightly off in a way that’s hard to name but impossible to ignore. People don’t trust it. They work around it. They stop using it altogether.

The missing ingredient isn’t better engineering. It’s empathy.

I’ve spent over two decades designing digital experiences and the work has increasingly brought me into the AI space, where the stakes on human-centered design have never been higher. What I’ve learned is that the same principles that make any digital experience trustworthy apply with even greater force to AI. People need to understand what they’re interacting with. They need to feel that the system is working for them, not on them. They need to know what’s happening, why, and what to do when something goes wrong. These aren’t nice-to-haves. In an AI context they’re the difference between adoption and abandonment.

Empathy in AI design means asking different questions before a line of code is written. Not just “what can this do?” but “who is this for, and what will it feel like to use?” Not just “is this accurate?” but “does this feel trustworthy?” Not just “does it work?” but “does it actually serve the human on the other side of it?”

That question is the one I bring to every project. It’s the foundation of the Five Precepts of Empathic Design, and it’s the standard I believe every AI product should be held to.

The technical capability is there. What the industry needs now is the human-centered thinking to match it. Empathy isn’t a soft skill in AI design. It’s the most necessary one.
