Curriculum Framer

Client

Authentic Education

Curriculum Framer is a web-based tool for teachers and curriculum designers to design their curriculum using the Understanding by Design® approach co-authored by Grant Wiggins of Authentic Education.

Challenge

The website was rich with functionality to help teachers define their curriculum while aligning it to lessons, defined goals and various standards, including the Common Core State Standards. But the user experience was not intuitive and frustrated users.

Project Approach and Results

We collaborated with Authentic Education to redesign the user experience and visual design for their robust curriculum design tool.

We began the project with user interviews of practicing teachers, curriculum designers, directors and school principals to better understand how teachers design curriculum and present lessons in the classroom and how management performs reviews of curriculum. With the research we provided recommendations for the design and created wireframes. We created moodboards to establish the look-and-feel and created visual designs.

A robust reviewing feature was also built into the design for school officials and principals, teacher leads and curriculum directors to review and approve curriculum prior to classroom instruction. The design approach was responsive for access on desktop and tablets. The design met the needs of teachers by offering flexibility and ease-of-use while providing a structure for aligning lessons and assessments to the defined goals and various standards, including the Common Core State Standards.
