The Congress of Neurological Surgeons is the largest neurosurgical society in the world and the global leader in neurosurgical education, serving to promote health by advancing neurosurgery worldwide through innovation and excellence in education. With more than 8,000 members worldwide, the CNS provides global leadership in neurosurgery by inspiring and facilitating scientific discovery and its translation into clinical practice. The CNS maintains the vitality of the profession through volunteer efforts of its members and the development of leadership in service to the public, to colleagues in other disciplines, and to neurosurgeons throughout the world in all stages of their professional lives.
The CNS wanted to create a digital performance support tool and learning portal where neurosurgeons and residents can quickly view cases just before heading into the operating room or browsing to learn approaches and techniques in brain surgery.
Client Challenge
Neurosurgeons needed to be able to use the app in different ways for different tasks. At times, they will want to browse the app and learn in-depth techniques over a broad number of topics during time dedicated to learning. They may also need to use it just before heading into the operating room to view similar cases to the one that stands before them. The app needed to be easy to use, display high-resolution imagery and detailed information and serve these important use cases.
Project Approach and Results
In collaboration with CNS and YMLearning, we designed NEXUS where neurosurgeons can view real neurosurgical operative techniques and approaches before heading into the operating room. The layout for each case and approach is very structured so learners can easily get all the information they need in a consistent manner. The content is rich with videos, step-by-step instructions, and expandable diagrams, photos, and images. Cases are submitted easily within the app by neurosurgeons around the world making it a robust crowd-sourced resource with 250+ cases today and counting! NEXUS is available on desktop, tablet and smartphone.
